“I just can’t believe it happened,” he said. “I didn’t even ask him. I had people that were in his ear that believed in my innocence.”
Exotic, who maintained his innocence throughout his trial, said he was “framed” by Baskin and others who wanted to shut down his zoo.
“I was lied on, I was cheated, I was stolen from, I was betrayed by so many people that were close to me,” he said.

In 2011, he was bitten by a tiger while attempting to feed it. The tiger’s teeth punctured Joe’s arm, causing him to bleed badly. Joe required stitches and was left with a permanent scar.
