    The Purpose of Casket Handles

Casket handles are an essential part of a casket, providing support and allowing for the safe transportation of the deceased. They also act as a symbol of respect for the deceased, signifying that their remains are being handled with care. As such, casket handles are an essential feature of any funeral service.

Casket handles come in a variety of styles, sizes, and materials. Depending on the type of casket chosen, casket handles may be made of wood, metal, brass, or plastic. The most common type of casket handle is the swing-bar handle, used to move the casket during transport. These handles are typically made of metal and feature two large handles that swing up and down so that pallbearers can easily grip them and lift the casket.

The importance of casket handles lies in the fact that they serve both a functional purpose and a symbolic one. On a practical level, casket handles allow for the safe and dignified transportation of the deceased. But on a more symbolic level, they serve as a tribute to the deceased’s life and signify that their remains are being treated with respect. Casket handles should be chosen with care, considering the deceased’s life and style.

    The History of Casket Handles

Casket handles are an integral part of the funeral process and have been used since antiquity. In Ancient Greece, caskets were adorned with handles made from olive wood, bronze, or iron and were used to carry the deceased. These handles allowed a dignified way to transport the body to its final resting place. As time passed, different materials, such as wood, leather, silver, and gold, were used to better reflect the status of the deceased.

In medieval Europe, handles on caskets began to take on a more ornate and decorative nature. They were often decorated with religious symbols, such as crosses and doves, as well as floral patterns. During the Renaissance, handles became increasingly elaborate, with designs incorporating classical motifs and naturalistic scenes. By the 19th century, handles had become even more complex, with intricate designs crafted from porcelain, ivory, and brass materials.

Today, casket handles come in a variety of styles ranging from traditional to modern. While they may no longer serve their original purpose of helping to transport the deceased, they are still used to honor the life of the person whose remains are being laid to rest. Casket handles can also symbolize the bond between family members who have shared in the sorrow of saying goodbye.

The Different Types of Casket Handles

When it comes to casket handles, there are various types and styles available to choose from. Here are some of the most common casket handle types:

    Side Handles

These are on both sides of the casket, usually made of metal and often covered with a fabric wrap. They provide an easy way for pallbearers to move the casket without having to lift it.

    Top Handles

These are also located on either side of the casket and are typically used for display purposes only, not for carrying the casket. Top handles can be either permanent or removable, depending on the type of casket.

    Shoulder Handles

These are made of metal or rope and usually support pallbearers when carrying the casket. They also give mourners a place to hold onto as they walk behind the casket during the funeral procession.

    Combination Handles

Combination handles include both side and top handles in one, offering an aesthetically pleasing solution that is both functional and stylish.

Choosing the correct type of casket handle depends on the size and weight of the casket, as well as the needs of the family. Side handles are generally the best option for carrying heavy caskets, while top handles are mostly used for display. Shoulder handles offer extra support for pallbearers, while combination handles are perfect for those who want both form and function in their choice of casket handles.

    Final Thoughts

Casket handles are an essential part of a funeral, as they provide a way to safely and securely move the casket. There is a long history behind casket handles, which have evolved over time to suit different purposes and styles. Today, there are various casket handles, ranging from classic wooden handles to more modern metal options. Ultimately, casket handles offer a practical and beautiful solution for transporting and honoring the deceased.
